Bringing our Sadie girl home
On the 11th of September at 6am, we woke up, chucked our 5 kids in the car and told them we were going to the Riverland. Which technically they were! But little did they know that David and I had something in store for them that would completely change the dynamics of our family!
I have spent the better half of the last 10 years asking to get a puppy for our kids.....(aka - me) The joke between Dave and I was that we could have kids or a dog....and we all know how that went. BUT, after some research into how much a pet can contribute to a family...especially with a child on the spectrum, Dave started coming around to the idea. Ellie, our oldest daughter keeps a prayer journal. She had prayed daily for a puppy! So with that in mind and David coming to the table and agreeding, the decision was made.
Then something amazing happened! No sooner had David said yes, and I had exhausted all local options I could find on line. I jumped on line to message a few friends to say I was in the market for a puppy. Within MINUTES (for real!) one of my besties, Jess messaged me with a picture of 4 puppies that were for sale near her. I couldn't believe it. The top left hand picture of this tiny little puppy melted my heart. I fell in love! But...was she still available? I quickly messaged the owner. But clicking on her profile I noticed that we had 5 friends in common! People that I consider my family so I was really surprised to see the connection! I soon discovered that our puppy's owner used to teach at our girls school! SMALL WORLD HUH?? Ellie's words from her prayer journal were running through my head the entire time we were chatting about all things puppies. It just all fit! I knew she was meant for us!
Once we confirmed that we were getting our little girl, then came the longest week of my life. Along with my inner struggle to not tell the kids! Especially Ellie. This grew INCREASINGLY hard as the week went on! At one point I was so excited/emotional I just burst into tears as Ellie was telling me about her day! I fobbed it off as Mummy was just 'having one of those days' but the very next day we were driving to our fitness session and a song came on the radio that I haddn't heard for YEAR....said song was one that always reminded me of the day my childhood dog and best buddy, Tarsha passed away! Cue tears again! To say Ellie was a little perplexed was an understatemet! But skip through to Sunday and I made it through the week and now the day was FINALLY here!
I had picked her name prior to getting her! The girls had had indepth discussions about what they would name a pet, if we ever got one and several names like 'Princess Cupcake Sparkles' and 'Rainbow Sweetie' were high on the YES list. Which actually gave me flash backs to a certain 'Friends' episode where Pheobe changed her name to 'Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock'. That pretty much made the decision that our little girl would 'come with a name'. After much debate and some bribing I picked Sadie. Sadie is Hebrew and means Princess! I thought it was perfectly fitting!
So, our day started early! The drive to Renmark was intense with Max power chucking everywhere through the car AFTER a bottle of milk. Then pulling over for Charlie to wee. Quick stop for some food and then FINALLY into Renmark, where the kids and Dave dropped me to my parents house for the next part of the day's journey. My Mumma had agreed to drive me to Mildura to pick Sadie up. I was an emotional wreck! When we finally arrived to pick Sadie up, I instantly felt like I had known her owner for years! I gave her a BIG hug and when one of her beautiful little daughters brought Sadie out to me I could barely look at her and threw myself into the paperwork so I didn't bawl right then and there! I could hear my Mum talking to Sadie and she was having a big smoochy cuddle! I seen Sadie's Mumma....she gave me a little look over! I fell in love with her as well! She was just BEAUTIFUL! I had silently hoped right then and there that Sadie would turn out JUST like her Mumma! Then the time came to take our Sadie girl back to meet her new family! I was just itching to get home! Sadie travelled so well and got to meet my Dad and my brothers Ben and Sam. Then I made a quick call to David to tell him to bring the kids over! We hid Sadie in my brother's room and sat the kids on the couch! They were a little confused as to why I asked them to sit down to take their photo! I just said I needed an 'updated shot'. Then - I went to get my Mum and Sadie!
The reaction was EPIC! There were screams of excitement when they finally laid eyes on Sadie! Mia said 'Granny did you get a puppy?'....well! When Mum said 'no, she's yours.' I am actually tearing up just thinking about it! Ellie just broke down and sobbed. Mia and Sienna were jumping up and down! Charlie and Max were instantly in love and trying to hold her and pat her! Seeing my big girls reaction just completely filled my heart with happiness. She came up to me just saying 'Thank you' over and over again! She thanked her Daddy and turned back to me and said 'I have prayed and prayed for her!' CUE TEARS!
So, after all the excitement, tears and laughter. Sadie went for a trip to meet Nanna and Poppa Wood and then we started the journey back home to Adelaide! What-a-day! What a beautiful, happy, day! I am so glad I was able to grab snippits of the day as we were travelling and document the day our family became 'Mum, Dad, 5 kids and a dog'. Our beautiful Sadie girl! That was nearly 3 weeks ago now and Sadie has brought so much joy into our family. So many giggles and doggie treats and fun! What a blessing she is!
So that's our story on bringing home our Sadie girl! Hope you get some giggles out of these photos!
